"I loved this book, and found it a refreshing, inspirational read."
A wonderfully inspirational tale of a search for a long lost colleague on the island of Ibiza. Set in the 1980’s, The Canticle of Ibiza by Justin Kurian describes how a New York financier turns his back on his job and travels to Ibiza in order to amend his past. Looking for Gunther, a long-lost colleague, John travels to Ibiza to try to locate him. During his search, he meets many people who have relocated to Ibiza inspired by the beautiful island scenery of radiant beaches, and stunning forests which have helped them find their spiritual wellbeing. John is welcomed into the ageing hippie culture which opens his eyes to a lifestyle of complete contrast to the one he left in Manhattan. He succumbs to their tranquil way of life and gratefully accepts invitations to gatherings and parties as he tries to garner information on the whereabouts of Gunther. As he searches, he also finds himself unexpectedly developing a meaningful relationship with one of the individuals that he encounters. This is a beautifully written book. As well as focusing on many of the relationships which John strikes up with the locals, the author also describes the stunning, rich landscape found in many remote areas of Ibiza which sound truly amazing. The book also reminds us of the importance of true friendship and mental wellbeing, while subtly underlining that without these wealth alone is not enough to fulfil. I loved this book, and found it a refreshing, inspirational read.
