Kelsey is convinced life would be better if only her best friend Lewis would finally come round to being in love with her. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening — instead he’s mysteriously moving further apart from her. What does she need to do differently?
You don’t often see this kind of relationship represented in stories — or at least, I haven’t read many — of, spoiler alert, friendships where they may have been in love with the other at some points but where the moral is that they are not right for each other and it’s not healthy their insistence on denying that fact. It’s an in-depth portrait of the misunderstandings between these two characters over the years of their relationship, and the extensive lies these two people tell each other even though they’re so intricately involved in each others’ lives — because they’re so involved — and the lengths they go to to hide the truth from each other, wishing that things were different, whether in their lives or in their relationship to one another.
For hearts that haven't learned to protect themselves, can there be anything more powerful than young love?
Kelsey and Lewis have been best friends for ten years before, finally, he kisses her for the first time … And leaves for a job in New York the next day. Counting down the days until he comes back to Liverpool, Kelsey busies herself with a new job, a handful of forgettable dates and awkward, weekly catch-ups with her mum. Then the days turn into months. And the months turn into a year.
But that's OK: all great love stories have bumps in the road. Right?
But something happened to Lewis on the night of their first kiss which changed everything. And when Kelsey learns the devastating truth, she has to make a choice. Should she keep pushing for her happy ending or give up on the love she thought would last forever?
