Travel around the world and discover the escapades of 40 misbehaving deities. Looking at African, Asian, Celtic, Classical, Egyptian, Mesoamerican and North American, Norse, Polynesian and Australian folklore, ‘‘Gods Behaving Badly: Mischievous Mythological Deities’ by John McKie introduces us to 40 gods and goddesses that got up to no good. From Zeus’ many trysts, to Loki’s schemes whether you’re familiar with mythology or not, this offers an accessible introduction into some of these deities and their escapades. I am quite familiar with Norse and Classical mythology so I was interested in reading this book as soon as I saw the title. It was nice to jog my memory with a summary of some of the stories I’d heard before reading Mythos or Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, as well as learning a bit more about mythology derived from the rest of the world. As a fantasy reader I recognised the names of some deities that have inspired characters in books that I’ve read, and so it was nice to get some context and learn more about the mythology and background of those figures. The book had clear regional categories and then focuses on one deity at a time, making it easy to follow and also easy to refer back to. Each chapter is concise, which I think makes this book a great introduction for those who are interested in reading more about mythology but perhaps unsure of where to start or about committing to something. However, the book also references other works in regaling these stories, allowing for plenty of scope to seek out further reading. An enjoyable whistle stop tour of god behaving badly that will be entertaining for anyone with an interest in learning more about mythology.
