"Heartwarming and fascinating, Cannon Hall Farm gets personal as the owners reveal the story behind the scenes of the farming TV show."
Cannon Hall Farm is well known as a tourist attraction, star of TV, and of course a working farm. While the place is now iconic, it’s the owning family who have made it so, and here we learn even more about them. Writer Robin Eveleigh has spent time with Roger, Cynthia and their three sons Richard, Robert, and David and created a warm, welcoming book about their lives. You can hear their individual voices, picture their lives and see how the farm came into being. The story starts with Roger, his early years with his parents, and how farming has been forever in his blood. His resilience is astounding, it’s easy to see how, with his vision and determination, Cannon Hall Farm started its journey and with Home Farm Tearoom then opened as a tourist attraction. Vibrant family photos bring the history of this family to life. Time after time they struggled to make ends meet, and in Richard’s section he explains: “Rudyard Kioling’s poem, If, does a fine job of summing up the family approach to both hardship and success: If you can meet with triumph and disaster; And treat those two imposters just the same”. This is an emotional story, there were times when I cried, but there are huge amounts of love and hope at its heart. The reality of farming, the love of the land, animals, and Yorkshire, and most importantly the essence of family all shine through, so I just had to include this as a Liz Pick of the Month. The title sums of the fortitude of this family beautifully, Cannon Hall Farm, Past, Present & Future is a compelling and very lovely book celebrating the Nicholson family.
