"The narrative twists kept me in suspense until the final stages of the story. "
Son of a notorious gangster, Jasper Carmicheal wants to break away from his family’s past. But is he too similar to his father and will his past let him break ties? Jasper’s father was a gangster and diamond thief who double crossed his allies and was betrayed in return. Years later, with crime families still searching for the missing diamonds and Jasper looking for a way to start fresh, beautiful florist Kate Reynolds may just be the escape he needed. Sharks are circling and his feelings for Kate are growing, will he be able to go ahead with his initial plan, or will he acknowledge his feelings for Kate and let her into more than his bed? Sparks definitely fly between Jasper and Kate! Jasper is single-minded about what he wants, and Kate seems physically drawn to him too. As with some dark romance / suspense storylines, consent is a faint, blurry line between the pair initially, but the switches in narrative perspective allows insight into the characters’ feelings while also working to keep Jasper’s business secrets elusive for twists later on. With multiple crime families, threats to Jasper and Kate everywhere and family legacies all tied together there are a lot of characters to keep track of. Add in Jasper keeping his intentions so close to his chest and I was at times left slightly adrift, although this meant I wasn’t ever sure what was going to happen next. The narrative twists kept me in suspense until the final stages of the story. I was trying to figure out whether there would be a resolution as the pages rapidly decreased. I think that Carmichaels' Diamonds would appeal more to the mafia romance readers than to the more traditional mystery and thriller readers. The focus of the narrative is a dark / morally grey romance with plenty of spice and spark. The criminal underworld and business dealing sit as a subplot in this charged story.
