Radice, an advocate of closer integration with Europe, examines the history of Britain's reluctance to become to closely associated with a greater Europe. He argues that suspicion of Europe must be cast aside if Britain is to profit from the European Community, and supports the movement towards a European framework in which to decide issues relating to welfare, the environment, democratic rights, monetary policy and external policy. The book is a pro-European polemic.
