A feast for the eyes, heart, and mind as well as stomach awaits in this beautiful grimoire. The focus lies with: “five facets of the occult through food: traditional recipes, the wheel of the zodiac, devotional meals to the planets, seasonal feasts to celebrate solstices and equinoxes, and practical spellwork”. Author Melissa Jayne Madara is a witch, herbalist, chef and storyteller and their work has been widely published in the US. The introduction tells of Melissa’s growing love of food and cooking from a young age and how they believe that the: “two disciplines of magic and cooking share some things in common”. They extend an invitation to investigate and explore kitchen witchcraft, particularly from the perspective of European traditions. You can enter without prior knowledge of witchcraft, and it also includes some very sensible advice on foraging. Skim the contents page and you will see recipes ranging from braised lamb shanks with juniper and red wine, through to roasted cauliflower with miso and yoghurt, and chocolate beetroot and grapefruit celebration cake, through to rosemary apple and cheddar picnic pies. The history of the feasts within each of the five facets is fascinating. The photography of the food was so vibrantly enticing it pulled me in and I have marked a seriously large number of recipes to try (my tummy is rumbling in anticipation as I write this). The Witch’s Feast is a glorious creation of recipes, thoughts, information, and historical references.
