Old Kilmarnock's Shops Synopsis

"Shopping is something we all do", says the author. Well, most of us… and this new book is packed full of photos and old adverts for Kilmarnock's shops, some long-forgotten but others from not so long ago. Valhalla, perhaps more widely known as the heaven of the Norse Gods, was the place to go for records for a generation of young people between 1993 and 2011. If you're older, you might recall Utilitarium, which later became Lewis's or when Hector McDonald's camera shop was in John Finnie Street. Some shops had been in business for decades before going the way of all flesh; others, like T4 Toys, were short-lived. Included are many casualties of the last 30 years, including Woolworth's, David Wishart, P & R Torbet, A & A Riddick, Mothercare and more.
