About

Old Portknockie, Findochty and Portessie Synopsis

Now part of Moray, these three fishing villages were formerly in the old county of Banffshire. Their stories are closely linked to the fishing industry and its development over the centuries. Portknockie dates from 1677, Findochty from 1716, and Portessie from 1727. The villages have old town areas with their gables to the sea and later buildings in a grid pattern of parallel streets. With the sea and its influence never far away, the book includes many photos of harbours, fishing boats and other coastal views such as the open-air swimming pool in Portessie and the Muckle Green caravan site. The author skilfully weaves images of the railway, village streets and public buildings into this illustrated local history of these villages and how they developed.
