From well-dressing and rushcarts to studentland, this formerly rural community just a few miles from Manchester city centre was transformed first by the new Wilbraham Road in 1869 but mostly but the opening of the Fallowfield Loop Railway in 1891 and then some years later the tramway from town reaching here. In the early 20th century the university had halls of residence built and the book features a good number of school and college-related photographs, in one of which George Best appears. He's just one of the many famous names associated with Fallowfield. Also included are such diverse subjects as the synagogue, the demolished Fallowfield Stadium, the military hospital on Moseley Road, mansions, street scenes and Alexandra Park Aerodrome.
