The seemingly apocalyptic scene on the front cover of the book shows the unofficial salvage operation by the locals when the S.S. Otra was wrecked off the North Sands in June 1912. The sea dominates this area and the book comprises the ancient seaport of Hartlepool, the 1840s West Hartlepool which became the third largest seaport in England and a large industrial city and Swainson Dock where there were shipyards, iron foundries and other industry. In 1967 these combined to become just Hartlepool. The author has local family ties and through this illustrated history tells the story of these settlements as well as Seaton Carew and Stranton.
