There's a cynical market taking money from people who have a complex relationship with food. In the world of running, that relationship is further complicated by the demands placed upon the body to compete. As an ultra-runner, leading sports dietitian and someone who has herself struggled with food, Renee McGregor stands out as someone to be trusted.
Fuel for Thought is a refreshingly honest and evidence-based exploration of nutrition in sport, cutting through fads and misinformation to provide practical, science-backed advice. McGregor challenges myths around dieting, restrictive eating, and performance, making it clear that proper fuelling isn’t just about physical health but also mental well-being.
What sets this book apart is its compassionate, no-nonsense approach. McGregor doesn’t just offer easy out of the fridge (tasty!) meal ideas — she explores the psychology of eating, helping athletes understand their relationship with food. Whether you’re an elite competitor or a recreational runner, her insights into REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) and disordered eating are essential reading.
I particularly enjoyed the case studies which are scattered through the pages - real stories reminding anyone struggling they are not alone and that at the heart of running is a supportive network and community which in itself is good for our well-being.
In stark contrast to the shallows of social media, Fuel for Thought is approachable and deeply informative, brushing aside toxic diet culture and empowering readers to rethink their approach to nutrition. A must-read for anyone who wants to perform well while maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

About
Fuel for Thought Synopsis
Food should be really simple. It is the means by which we nourish our bodies, providing them with the nutrients and fuel we need in order to live, exercise and socialise. Yet, in recent years, food and nutrition have become more complicated, confusing and polarising than ever before.
Fuel for Thought by leading sports dietitian Renee McGregor is a practical and trustworthy guide to sports nutrition, whether you’re a world-class or real-world athlete, or just someone who wants to improve their relationship with food. Cutting through the jargon and misinformation, Renee draws on over twenty years’ experience of working with sportspeople from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to provide straightforward, accessible advice about how you can fuel your adventures.
The follow-up to More Fuel You, in this book Renee looks at sports nutrition through the lens of her own sporting passion – running. She urges caution over the explosion of social media nutrition and fitness experts, apps and programmes that all claim to offer bespoke dietary advice. Instead, she offers practical information based on her own personal and professional experiences, including an A–Z of foods and a section dedicated to her own tried-and-tested, budget-friendly recipe ideas which use simple, everyday ingredients. There is also guidance on how to recognise and get help with dysfunctional behaviours, from REDs to exercise dependency, and how to be informed about your hormonal health when you go in search of appropriate support.
