"In 1930s Great Britain and Germany, war is brewing. For two young men, Danny Shaw and Manfred Brehme, the simple life they enjoy will soon change forever. Both are destined to become soldiers. One day, at a place neither has ever heard of, they will meet on the battlefield. "
The Shadow of War is the first book in a trilogy following the lives of two boys destined to meet at the battle of El Alamein. It opens with a violent and realistic prologue where one – we don’t learn which – has barely survived a battle but remains in mortal danger.
We are then introduced in some detail to the two lead characters, Danny and Manfred. We see their bucolic early lives, their hopes, their aspirations; separated by distance and culture but, in many ways, with similarities. We experience their military training and their first experience of the realities of war.
The Shadow of War is an interesting WWII novel which leads the reader through the exposition and rising action stages of a lengthy story. The prologue suggests the climax, challenge and final resolution contained in books two and three may be factual and bloody.
An ideal book for fans of historical fiction, particularly the Second World War, particularly those who enjoy a series where the full denouement develops in the final part of a trilogy.
