"In all I think that ‘The Curious Pathways of Persistence’ is an entertaining contemporary, feel-good read."
Two old flames reunite in a quest for a mysterious lost painting. A chance reunion on a summer holiday for history teacher Bear Hoskins draws him into a curious investigation for a stolen then lost Dulos painting. Ciara is now working at the Neue Basler Kunstgalerie is handed an unusual bequest that admits to theft and hiding of the famous painting during the second world war and wishes for it to be recovered and for any proceeds to be forwarded to the cause of peace in Europe. So begins a journey that brings two old flames closer together and reveals the secrets of a missing artwork. This is an interesting character-driven narrative that winds across Europe. I found Bear and Ciara to be likeable and was curious about what would happen once they had reconnected. The tension in the final parts of the book builds and my jaw dropped as revelations were made. The ending felt open to interpretation and filled with hope for Bear and Ciara. In all I think that ‘The Curious Pathways of Persistence’ is an entertaining contemporary, feel-good read. There are moments of philosophy and of course lots of references to art and The Barbizon School for art enthusiasts but even those not familiar with art will discover an enjoyable mystery and narrative here.
