From neo-Nazi racism to newfound remorse, and from England to Poland, Hungary and Austria, Peter Harris’ The Blighted Son presents a journey of redemption and self-discovery through the lens of medical post-operative personality change and childhood indoctrination.
When medical journalist Edwin is invited to be present at a lifesaving heart transplant, he has little idea of the miraculous journey he’s about to become part of. During his follow-up meetings, he discovers that the recipient of the heart is a known neo-Nazi with a history of terrible hate crimes, and that’s just the start of an extraordinary story of unexpected transformation.
With lots of dialogue, frequent TV-style recaps ensuring readers never lose their way in the plot, and fine detail on daily life, The Blighted Son is fascinating in concept and unfussy in style.

The Blighted Son Synopsis
Invited to witness a lifesaving heart transplant operation, journalist Edwin Benn is thrilled to be in on the action. But when it comes to interviewing the fortunate recipient, Edwin finds himself questioning whether the man was worth saving. A white supremacist neo-Nazi with a track record of hate crimes, James Fisher is anything but pleasant to be around, and is furious when he discovers the identity of his heart donor, going to absurd lengths to ‘make it his own’ by having a swastika tattooed on his chest.
Appalled by the man’s behaviour, Edwin struggles to write his article without mentioning that racist Fisher did not deserve his donor heart. But as Edwin continues to follow Fisher’s recovery, he discovers that the man he first interviewed has changed dramatically, and as he continues to report on the story, he becomes increasingly involved in helping him reconnect with his long-forgotten past.

About Peter Harris
Peter Harris is the former Health and Medical Correspondent at Manchester Evening News, a post that for 25 years took him on assignments around the world and the rest of the UK and allowed him to witness and report on the first heart transplant operation at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester.
After leaving the newspaper, he launched his own specialist Press and PR company and wrote his first book God’s Sabbatical Years, a Holocaust memoir. Harris’ second book, Salford at Work, was followed a year or so later by A Doctor in Lowryland, an account of life in post-war Salford. It won the 2020 Frank Mullineux Local History Award, presented annually by the Salford Local History Forum.
Harris’ most recently released book, The Blighted Son, tells the extraordinary story of heart transplant recipient James Fisher, whose lifesaving surgical procedure has entirely unexpected consequences. Drawing on his memory of witnessing the North West’s pioneering first heart transplant, he delivers a captivating psychological thriller tackling racial prejudice, medical ‘miracles’, and the importance of self-reflection.
