A family’s brush with a secretive tribe impacts generations. We are introduced to ‘The Mystical Kiss’ by Behkorsk Sinosital with a history of the Coritani tribe, hiding from persecution when the Romans invaded Britain, the group having remained in the shadows for centuries, keeping to themselves and developing telepathic communication abilities. When a falling birth rate threatens the people, they seek to bring more children into their group, “assisting” mothers who found themselves out of wedlock or otherwise unable to cope. Outreach members live among the rest of society, connecting with people and reporting back in the form of human interest stories in their own newspapers. It is from this perspective we then follow the family histories of Behkorsk and Juliette, how they end up meeting and falling in love and their lives together, all with the Coritani tribe looming above the scene like an ever watchful cloud. The main bulk of the narrative is a story of family, taking us through generations of Behkorsk and Juliette’s families with meetings, marriages, divorces, affairs, familial disputes and children brought up. The cameos from the Coritani adds a sprinkle of magical realism and mystique into an interesting but otherwise recognisable family saga. The story is well paced, with plenty of time given to introduce each generation. There’s also a family tree at the start of the book which proved useful. The brief mystery at the end adds a momentary excitement to a steady paced but eminently readable family story.
