LoveReading Says
The life of a maid in New York City in the 1920s and a film director seeking solace in Ireland in 2022 could not be more different, but their stories intersect in this beguiling dual timeline novel.
A Maid on Fifth Avenue by Sinead Crowley examines the very different lives of maid Annie Thornton and director Emer Molloy who live one hundred years apart but whose stories intersect. Told in alternating chapters, each woman is struggling to figure out where they belong in the world.
Annie, the maid, is new to New York City and working for a wealthy family. Although she eagerly awaits the letters from back home, she is excited about the possibilities her new life presents. She falls in love, but unfortunately it doesn’t work out when she discovers the troubles she thought she had sorted in Ireland have followed her to Manhattan.
Emer, the director, has fled Los Angeles with post-Covid burnout to stay at her family’s holiday home in County Kerry. While there, she decides to learn to surf and quickly falls for her handsome surf instructor (is there any other kind?) whose family history is not what it first appears.
This is the fifth novel by Crowley, the arts and media correspondent with Irish national broadcaster RTE news.
The dual timelines and contrasting lifestyles of the two main characters make this novel a historical page turner.
