"Feisty full moon parties on a paradisiacal Thai island take a sinister turn in this highly readable, escapist summer thriller."
Justifiably billed as The Beach for a new generation, Sarah Ochs’ The Dive sees an idyllic Thai island known for its diving and wild full moon parties transformed into a full-on horror movie setting.
Reeling with revenge, betrayal, blackmail threats and murder, and centred on a bunch of travellers who’ve settled on the island to escape their pasts, it offers readers an outlandish slice of sun-drenched escapism, with all the page-turning twists you could wish for.
Dive instructor Cass is newly engaged after adopting a new identity (we discover the old identity she’s cast aside gradually as the story unfolds). While in the throes of love on her very own (apparent) love island, Cass receives an ominous “I know who you are” note, before someone else warns, “You are not safe”. Then she discovers a young female dive student dead in the water.
Meanwhile, through a second narrative, we follow Brooke, a young influencer who was quick to befriend Cass and the other Permanents on the island, and who longs to be a proper journalist.
As the body count rises, it emerges that pretty much everyone has come to escape something. The question is, will anyone be able to escape the island unscathed? Will anyone survive? Smoothly readable, and packed with plot twists that keep you guessing and shifting your loyalties, The Dive boasts an abundance of whodunnit intrigue and action.
