"An introduction to Italian American magic, focusing on a happy home and good fortune."
A comprehensive and serious (though accessible) book for witches. Author Dee Norman looks at the Italian American magical tradition, and is a lifelong student and teacher. She introduces the basic but important life skills she learned as a child growing up an Italian American household. She also explains the time she began to realise that the life skills from her childhood were viewed as witchcraft or magic by others. The practical magic she learned as she grew older is: “not structured like other magical practices involving ritual work like casting circles or long, involved verbal spells. Instead, our practices are short, focused and specific to interests of daily life”. It feels as though this would a great book for those starting out. She sets out the important aspects to learn, while being open possibilities. She gives practical exercises helping you to sharpen your attention and find your focus. Advice comes in many forms, including exercises, ingredients, recipes, and examining traditions. A fascinating chapter advises on candle magic and another on how to maintain good fortune! This is an easy book to dip in and out of, to soak up the different aspects of being a witch. Burn A Black Candle feels welcoming, and the magic within uncomplicated and obtainable.
