"The Grief Handbook provides a safe space to let yourself feel, to let yourself be, to let yourself grieve. Whether you're angry, sad, anxious, bereft, lost or disbelieving, Bridget McNulty has got your back."
Grief is all consuming and affects every part of us - how we feel, the way we think, our physical and mental health. It's one of the worst things that can happen to us, losing someone we love. Yet unless you've experienced it, it's impossible to understand. Even when we have lost someone we love, everyone's experience of grief is so different, how can we possibly fathom it, understand, empathise.
McNulty is not a grief expert but she has experienced grief, and shares the activities, the resources, the grief experts who shed some light on her journey. She holds your hand, page by page and helps you to face your grief head on, consciously.
She lost her mum unexpectedly. After health problems, she was diagnosed with cancer and died 13 days later. My mum was 58 when I lost her. Fatal heart attack, out of the blue. I still feel lost, cheated, alone. There's no easy way to lose someone you love, and we all grieve in different ways. I'm not sure I've ever properly grieved her, although I miss her every single day.
An avid reader, McNulty looked for a book that could shine a light through her fog of grief, an honest exploration of how to deal with it, a handbook. She couldn't find it, so she wrote it.
And am I glad she did. Nine years on from my all-consuming grief this book was a god send. Thank you Bridget. I wrote a letter to grief, I coloured in, I scribbled, I wrote what I wish I could have shared, I designed rituals.
Taking you through the early days, to finding what helps, to the space between, back to life and into the future, McNulty provides advice, tips and lots of resources from her own experience and other grief books she tried, in a helpful, accessible and gentle way.
I cried, I smiled and I will be pressing this book into the hands of anyone who is experiencing grief, anyone who needs help navigating the worst days of their life.
