The Light Between Us is moving and fascinating in equal measure. I’m interested in the power of the mind, however I’m sceptical about an afterlife, so will admit to starting to read with an eyebrow ready for raised action. The author is a high school English teacher and a psychic medium, in this book she shares some of the stories of people she has helped and how she believes that by gaining an understanding of the afterlife, you can live more peacefully in the present. If you are a non-believer, then I recommend going straight to chapter one and leaving the introduction until the end, as personally, I felt slightly alienated by some of the things said with such earnest conviction. In a rough chronological order we hear about Laura Lynne Jackson’s childhood, her own relationship with her gift and how she has affected the lives of other people. I was absolutely riveted by chapter 29, where Laura describes having her brainwave activity tested. As I got to know Laura and heard her tell her story, I sobbed, I smiled, and as I thought about the people and animals I’ve loved, I even cried and laughed at the same time. I am still cynical, but gosh, I really, really enjoyed reading this book. So, whether you are a believer or not, if you have an open mind, you may find, as I did, an absolutely engrossing, emotional and intriguing read.
