If you haven’t heard of The Singing Dentist, where have you been? Perhaps living  under the same rock as I have. As someone who has never shied away from the dentist’s chair, had braces three times by 25 and is a little bit precious about keeping my teeth in the best possible condition despite a chocolate habit; I know I may be one of the privileged few who have never had a scary or bad experience at the dentist. Remarkable after being brought up with a parent with a bit of a dentist phobia.

Regardless of personal experience, The Whole Tooth by Dr Milad Shadrooh offers an insight into his world that I think will leave even the most reticent of patients keen to make an appointment. There’s funny Wimpy Kid-like illustrations, details from a day at the practice and insight into dentistry as a business. To sweeten the deal there’s also reflections on how he chose dentistry as a career path, its competition with his love for music, and the merging of the two passions with his YouTube channel, The Singing Dentist, (which currently has 148,000 subscribers). His enthusiasm for dentistry shines from every page like the brightest smile. Patient struggles are addressed with compassion, fear is never made light of with sarcasm, and the rise of social media and cosmetic treatments (and reasons not to always have them) are handled persuasively and articulately. An additional chapter as important as flossing, myths are busted and I was shocked to see which ones I fell foul of.

Milad’s sense of humour shines throughout, from recollections of disasters during training that had me laughing to a Horrible Histories style look back at dental care through the ages that left me shuddering, (definitely not one of those times you wished you were born in another era). In all this is an extra check-up that made smile wide and made sure my teeth will look better because of the wisdom provided.
