With fight scenes for action fans, world building and tech for sci-fi fans, follow Tristan as he faces his past and decides whether to join the fight against tyranny. ‘New World Order’ by Robert Slaughter and Jerry Brown is a sci-fi adventure that introduces us to Tristan Hart, skilled mercenary hired for a USC mission against the tyrannical Federation. This mission leads Tristan down a path that has him questioning his political and moral stance as the Federation gains a firmer grasp on power. The political landscape is a tenuous one and as you read, you don’t know who to trust and what might happen next. You’re straight into the action following Tristan on his missions finding allies, friends and enemies along the way, which I think would appeal to readers looking for action thrills. There’s new worlds, gadgets and species to get to know which will appeal to those looking for a sci-fi read, but the narrative about a fight against a corrupt and overly powerful government is a universal one that readers who don’t normally pick up sci-fi will find accessible. I also liked the fade-in images at the start of each chapter although they are repetitive and it would perhaps be nice to include the other digital illustrations featured throughout the book in the same way. The book appears to be a start of a trilogy, although the story is well rounded there’s hints of plenty more of the same to come as Tristan and Eliza’s story continues. The ‘New World Order’ trilogy is set in the same world as two other series by the authors, ‘Order of Avalon’ and ‘City of the Fallen’ (both with one book out so far). I believe you can read the trilogies in any order, I haven’t read the other books and did not feel like I had to catch up. I think that this is a strong read for sci-fi and action fans who want an expanding world to dive into.
