LoveReading Says
This is a fantastic book of our near future based on an alternative history where England was taken over by the Scion Government after the reign of Queen Victoria. Psychic power exists but is illegal and treasonous. That doesn’t stop the criminal underworld from profiting from it. There seems enough there to make an extremely satisfying novel, but no, Shannon has woven a world where scion with all its complexities is only a front and the real story concerns ethereal beings and a threat to all humankind. Fast, slick, disturbing, engaging, a really special book and I hope very much the start of a brilliant series. I am getting a little fed up with the plucky-girl-brings-down- dystopian-government plots that seem so popular these days, but this is really different, a world I can believe in and want to go back to. It has an extremely good thriller style and a marvellous first person to drag us into the story. Highly recommended. ~ Sarah Broadhurst
Wow, just wow! This is the first in a seven book dystopian fantasy series, and what an absorbing cracker of a read it is. If you haven’t yet stepped foot inside the fantasy genre, please don’t turn away, as this touches reality, breathes a possible future, and is just so, so readable. Set in 2056 London, in a reimagined world where the Scion government has been in power since 1929, clairvoyance is a criminal offence and has been forced underground, into crime, in order to survive. Paige is a dreamwalker, she works for the underworld though her father is part of the Scion regime, suddenly arrested, she finds herself in a prison camp in Oxford, and everything she thought she knew, falls to pieces before her eyes. The orders of clairvoyance are beautifully explained in such a way, that I immediately felt at home and sank straight into the story. Samantha Shannon has created a fascinating, different, stand-out story, this is a new edition and also includes a prequel novella about Paige and her first foray into the clairvoyance underworld. An action packed humdinger of a story, I lived it, I loved it… The Bone Season is a truly fabulous start to what promises to be an epic series. ~ Liz Robinson
