LoveReading Says

A Maxim Jakubowski selected title.

First published in 1937 by an author whose identity long remained mysterious (and chose as his name that of his main character), this is both a particularly ingenious puzzle of a murder mystery and also a whole re-examination of crime writing methodology and principles. Lest that sounds overly pretentious, it's also great fun as you weave your way through a tale of malfeasance and betrayal set in the London film business, with femmes fatales, untrustworthy narrator, red herrings strewn like banana skins across the whole plot, a dogged police investigator, a series of tricky endings that contradict each other, followed by an epilogue which brings all that came before and was apparently resolved into question while deceptively writing its own reviews and muddying the reader's whole perception. A delightful piece of sleight of hand and dazzling when you consider when it was written. A timely reissue. ~ Maxim Jakubowski
