"An epic quest to save their lands from destruction undertaken by father and son."
An epic quest to save their lands from destruction undertaken by father and son. ‘The Young’ by Nicholas John Powter is a fantasy story that sees Sven and his son Fren head out on a quest to find his son Dason and attempt to save his land from an evil religious cult who worships the darkness and is destroying the land. The narrative moves quickly, dropping the reader into the world as the characters start their journey. I did find the exposition at the start of the book a little clunky, the initial world building information could have been shown to the reader in a more fluid way than being told about the world a bit unnaturally by characters that live in that world and would already be familiar with it. I liked the father and son dynamic throughout the story and the way that Fren has a bit of a coming of age arc, being the one that needs to be protected in the opening pages before stepping in to take action. At its core I think that the storyline is interesting and definitely has potential. However the writing style could be improved to make the story flow more and feature less repetitive phrasing (a lot of “said” and “for” throughout). Also perhaps Fren’s mention of needing a “wife to serve him” towards the end may alienate some the audience and could be rephrased. As it is, because the writing structure is quite simple ‘The Young’ may appeal to a wide range of fantasy readers - from teens through to adults.
