The Stolen Heir reintroduces Suren and Oak, eight years after the battle of the serpent in Holly Black’s popular The Folk of the Air series. With part one of this tale written from Suren’s perspective we dive into The Prisoner’s Throne to see how their story continues from Oak’s point of view. The plot follows immediately on from the dramatic conclusion to its predecessor and concludes The Stolen Heir duology. Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal but how far reaching are the repercussions of his deceptions, and what choices will he have to make in order to keep everyone he loves alive.
This is an entertaining and twisting new addition to The Folk of the Air series. It was great to get greater insight into Oak’s character, beloved of all of Elfhame but with significantly more depth of character than was perhaps first perceived. It was really interesting to see him try to navigate the path between charming people with ease and struggling to be his authentic self. We discover more about his past and the stories that have come from Elfhame in previous books, while also getting to see familiar faces again as High King and Queen Jude and Carden stop at nothing to ensure their stolen heir is returned. Full of Faerie cunning, secrets and half truths this is an enigma of a plotline with twists that will keep you second guessing everyone and everything until the end. I very much enjoyed my time in Elfhame once more, which is cemented as one of my most favourite worlds to visit.
The highly anticipated conclusion to the Stolen Heir duology by no. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author Holly Black.
An imprisoned prince. A vengeful queen. And a battle that will determine the future of Elfhame.
Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal. Imprisoned in the icy north and bound to the will of a monstrous new queen, he must rely on charm and calculation to survive. With High King Cardan and High Queen Jude ready to use any means necessary to retrieve their stolen heir, should Oak attempt to regain the trust of the girl he's always loved, or remain loyal to Elfhame and hand over the means to end her reign - even if it means ending Wren too...
With war looming and treachery lurking in every corner, neither Oak's guile nor his wit will be enough to keep everyone he loves alive. He will have some terrible choices to make.
