"A hilarious, page-turning romp of revenge and romance plays out in the cut-throat world of reality TV"
Love Love Island and Back with the Ex? Better still, do you love to hate reality shows of this ilk? Then you’ll love Sophie Gonzales’ Never Ever Getting Back Together. It’s a whip-smart firecracker of contemporary culture, women doing it for themselves, and rom-com radiance.
A couple of years have passed since 18-year-old Maya and her cheating, wealthy boyfriend Jordy parted ways. When she’s approached to appear on reality TV show Second Chance Romance, her first understandable response is a resounding “hell no!” Since their spilt, Jordy has become even more intolerable, what with his sister having married into European royalty, and him being fawned over for his philanthropy.
But it’s not long before Maya gets to thinking that this might just present an explosive opportunity to take revenge in front of millions of viewers, so she heads into the fancy-pants Second Chance Romance house. Her plan gets off to a fiery start when she’s made to share a room with Skye, the very same person Jordy cheated with. After a whole lot of fighting, the young women wind up on the same team and play along with Jordy and the show’s producers as they work towards winning the long game.
Maya and Skye’s craftiness at manipulating scenes is brilliant, as is their sparky banter. Then there’s the sparks that fly as the programme and novel reach a spectacular, showstopping climax. Let’s just say that Jordy’s just desserts are suitably served, and Maya and Skye also get exactly what they deserve….
