Another new writer who is already well-known to us, this time acclaimed SF author Jon Courtenay Grimwood reinventing himself as a thriller storyteller in definite overdrive. Set in 1980s Moscow, this tale of the travails of Tom Fox, a disgraced and semi-exiled British agent who stumbles on a complex conspiracy plot with roots in the bleakness of the Fall of Berlin and now involving the highest ranks of the Kremlin at a time of political instability and struggles for power at the top of the Russian hierarchy, is a keeper. Few authors have evoked Russia in the 60s with such talent (and no need to use patois or mispelled Russian in the process as too many of his fellow practitioners have an irritating habit of doing ...). When the British ambassador's step daughter is kidnapped and mutilated bodies start popping up in the snow, Fox, a borderline alcoholic still reeling from the unravelling of his personal and professional life, is called on to help, never realizing the sheer depths of the web of intrigue he is falling into head first. Memorable characters, powerful recreations of history and an unrelenting pace that will keep you breathless. A striking debut in the genre.
