While some readers turn to romantic, feel-good festive stories at this time of year, SJI Holliday’s The Party Season is a chilling Christmas thriller for those who enjoy meaty novels of detection and revenge that throw you off the scent with unexpected twists and thought-provoking motives for murder.
Throughout the novel, readers are afforded multiple perspectives. We meet the murderer first — the “Party girl” killer who dresses herself up and infiltrates office work parties, set on deadly seduction. Early on, adding to the suspense, we learn her mother is dying, and she’s set on making sure “someone - anyone - pays for what they did to my mum. And I’m not talking about money.”
Then there’s DS Becky Greene and DI Eddie, who are tasked with investigating the murder of men in hotel rooms, and an unlikeable guy called Harry, who works in the office of a biotech company. As connections between the characters come to light, there’s a sense of closing in as Christmas approaches.
With the case seeming to be tied up neat as a bow on a fancy gift box, The Party Season is a satisfying seasonal read for fans of detective thrillers, with the added zing of unexpected surprises.
