Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of George Peele: Edward I, And, the Battle of Alcazar
No such alliance is mentioned in the chronicles of Edward's reign, but late in 1589 France did propose a mutual defense pact with England. According to Camden, The King of Navarre being te duced to these Streights, encamped With his Forces near the Town, and dispatched in all Haste into England to crave Aid of the Queen, and to offer a League as well offensive as defensive. 1 Al though there is no possibility of borrowing here, the verbal simi larity is striking enough to suggest that dramatist and historian are talking about the same league. The proposed defense pact, which was not formally entered into at that time by the English govern ment, might have been called the Protestant league, intended as it was to oppose the Catholic league. The French plan would evi dently have welcomed any of the Protestant countries of Europe which cared to join.
