The Albigenses, Vol. 2 of 4 Synopsis

Excerpt from The Albigenses, Vol. 2 of 4: A Romance

To understand the cause of the knight's career, which he pursued at full gallop among the rocky defiles at the risk of his life, we must retrograde a few steps, and return to the scene that passed in the cave of the Albigeois on the night we have before described. Genevieve had sat supporting her grandfather's head on her knees, after carefully spreading under his chilled limbs her mantle of woollen cloth, and gazed on a fissure of the cavern through which the moonlight streamed, and felt as she gazed the deep wish to solemnize her feelings, and abstract them if possible from anxious and troubled views of her earthly destination the solicitudes for that frail and feverish being, which though forced on her by no cessity, her pure heart felt it like a'crime to dwell on in her hours of lonely=re?ection.
