That the period covered by this volume has Opposed many sharp difficulties to any sort of summary treat ment need hardly be stated. It was of course a period of misunderstanding and of passion; and I cannot claim to have judged rightly in all cases as between parties. I can claim, however, impartiality of judgment for impartiality is a matter of the heart, and I know with what disposition I have written.
