"This LoveReading Star Book is a superbly plotted, acutely atmospheric and suspense-filled novel about twisted friendship, murder, and revenge."
A novel that will send sharply contoured tunnels of thoughts burrowing through your head. A few days have passed since I read Looking Glass Sound, and I’m still thinking about it, still caught up in its deeply dark velvety depths. Wilder Harlow experiences tragedy in his early life, back in the New England town where it all began he determines to write of the betrayal of his past, but is accompanied by haunting visions. Catriona Ward sits high up on my list of favourite authors, she has this incredible ability to take you on the most beautiful writing journey, where somehow you completely trust her but not your own thoughts as you read. As usual it is hard to pigeon-hole the genre here, it’s an enigmatic mix of gothic psychological thriller/horror, but then again, it’s also something else entirely. It is intricately plotted, and oh how I would love to know how she threads this all together as she writes. A gossamer web of deception and subterfuge spins through the pages, each new revelation creating further strands that send out reaching tendrils of turmoil. I could not have guessed at the beginning where I ended, and I suspect each person will experience their own unique journey through this novel. By the time I finished I felt as though I had been dropped into the wilderness of the ocean, I’m still slightly stunned. Looking Glass Sound will sit as one of our LoveReading Star Books, and one of my Liz Picks of the Month (and year) it’s complex, provocative, intimate, and absolutely wonderful.
