"Ash on the Vine is a complex family story that offers an emotive and thought-provoking look at the impact of a traumatic past, secrets kept hidden and wounds that haven’t healed."
A complex, thought-provoking and emotive story of family history and generational trauma. Work to bring IDF soldier Sami out of her shell opens a well of family secrets, historical tensions and generational trauma. Gideon is doing a Phd in philosophy and is asked to work with Sami who is withdrawn and seemingly depressed. From his specialism of working with Holocaust survivors and their descendants he suggests that Sami learning about the experiences her grandmother hasn’t spoken about will help Sami to integrate into the army better. These conversations dig up family secrets and trauma that are brought even more prominently into the current time when a shadow from the past recognises the family. This is an interwoven, character-driven, family story. I liked that the book is told from a range of perspectives so that you can see the emotional impacts on each character. It’s an interesting narrative device to see historic tensions feature prominently and merge as German Third Reich officer Fritz becomes a part of Hamas, keen to maintain his anti-semitic prejudices and set out on a more personal vendetta when he recognises the Ben-Davids. Ash on the Vine is a complex family story that offers an emotive and thought-provoking look at the impact of a traumatic past, secrets kept hidden and wounds that haven’t healed.
