A compelling story of a woman on the cusp of change. You may think that ‘Silence of the Seamaid’ is an odd choice of title for Ann Medlock considering we follow Lee Palmer, editor and writer as she lives and works in a post war era where women had very specific societal roles and expectations. However, as the story progresses the title starts to make sense. Lee, who is struggling to keep her head above water as she divorces her first husband, and is enticed by the charming Italian-American Joe Montagna, worrying always of being left homeless with her son. The story is set in a bygone era, where women had fairly strict roles and expectations, with some husbands that react negatively to when those expectations are not met. The author sets a realistic scene and draws you into a life-like story, with the backdrop always subtly filled in. We follow along with naïve hope as Lee falls for Joe and starts to feel secure and happy. Our heart breaks as the façade starts to slip only to gradually reform as she begins to heal and understand herself more. I liked the interwoven motif of the mermaid, the sea and underwater, which seems an errant detail to begin with, before gradually becoming more significant. I also admired Lee’s determination and development over the course of the plot, ending with the feeling of possibilities for the future and hope. This is an interesting tale of identity, an emotional rollercoaster with ups and downs along the way and a compelling main character you find yourself urging to succeed from the side-lines.
