Devizes Synopsis

This collection of old photographs of Devizes shows people, places and events through the twentieth century but concentrates mainly on examples from the latter half of it. There are chapters on the changing street scene and on some of the family firms that once dominated the town's retail and manufacturing trade, now largely replaced by national chains and new local industries.

Devizes' long established carnival is featured with a wealth of pictures taken over the years. It has been an important event in the town for a long time, and has recently seen some modern developments that are turning it into a major local attraction.
