About

Poole Synopsis

This book of over 200 old photographs features the town of Poole from the beginning of the century to more recent scenes. Most of the photographs come from private collections and many have not been published before. Many areas of Poole feature, including Broadstone, Parkstone and Canford Cliffs. We see images of the beach, the quay and Brownsea Castle. Poole's former industries are also included, such as the White house Laundry and Christopher Hill Ltd. Well-known traders are featured, including Bailey and Beament butchers in the high street, the Co-op self service store in Parkstone Road in the 1950s and Field's Garage in Ashley Road. The people of Poole feature just as prominently as the townscape and we see the community in moments of leisure enjoying many memorable events, such as the 'Beating of the Bounds' ceremony, operatic society productions and regattas. The people are also captured at work and during formative years at school. Some of Poole's best known individuals are recorded, including Louie Dingwall, who ran a bus company but also trained racehorses, Fred (Sandy) Wills, a well-known fisherman and Frederick Phelps Oakley, Sheriff of Poole in 1911. This book will evoke many feelings of nostalgia and will be enjoyed by all who know and love this Dorset town.
