I was completely surprised by this, I thought it was going to be a great big history of Ireland, which it is, but I didn’t expect it to be a mystery too. We are given the history in a series of tales told by an itinerant storyteller as he travels the land. We are given his story too and that of a boy searching for him, a touching tale that anchors the vast subject. It is beautifully done.
Comparison: Dorothy Dunnett, Robert Harris.
Similar this month: None but try Susanna Clarke, it’s fab.
