The fifth volume in the Rethinking India series looks at the reality of gender equality in India against the promises made in the Constitution of India of a just and equal country. India remains a very unequal country and women control, at best, about 10-15 per cent of economic and political resources. In India, a highly patriarchal society, social norms give very little power to women and consequently, women have little control or influence over decisions taken within their households, in markets, or in political spaces.
