"What a lovely addition this is to The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, thoughtful, amusing, and warmly satisfying, it ticks all the right boxes. "
It is no secret that I love reading novels by Alexander McCall Smith, its just such a joy to sink into the pages. His writing is so consistently good that you always know that you will be transported both in mind and soul. Here we join The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency again, and this series based in Botswana is one of my happy places. Mma Ramotswe is asked by the manager to assist with a series of unfortunate events that have befallen his highly regarded hotel. As always there is a gentle wandering plot that weaves and links together in the most delightful way. The sense of place seeps into you, it touched my senses and allowed me to feel its colour and vibrancy. It really is all about Precious and Mma Ramotswe, who both dwell on the list of my favourite characters in literature. If you stepped into the middle of one of their novels having never met them, you would very quickly gain an understanding of who they are. The humour is warm and empathetic as it raises an eyebrow at the foibles of humanity. These books allow you to escape for a while which is wonderful. The Great Hippopotamus Hotel is beautifully readable and rewarding, this latest addition joins a series that I can highly recommend.
