February 2011 Guest Editor Carmen Reid on Candace Bushnell...
I’m crazy about Candace. How does her writing compare to the SATC TV series? The TV series is M&Ms and Candace is like silky, sinful, 70% pure dark chocolate. My favourite of her books is One Fifth Avenue: so glitteringly sophisticated and hard-edged. This is New York in the Noughties and so prophetic of the downturn. It’s packed with bad girls, ambitious girls, larger-than-life girls. But for teen romance The Carrie Diaries is a wonderful whirl. It’s Carrie: the high school years and Candace absolutely captures the huge, emotional punch of first love. The agony and fantasy as Carrie longs for Sebastian. The ecstasy when she has him. The inevitable tragedy of losing him... and to her best friend. It’s wonderful!
The Lovereading view...
The new novel from Candace Bushnell comes filled with all the things we love about her novels – fashionable settings and characters and plenty of fabulousness. Set around the occupants in the Fifth Avenue apartment block of the title glamour, gossip and sexual politics all have their moments as the battle over real estate commences.

About
One Fifth Avenue Synopsis
One Fifth Avenue is the chicest, hottest, most sought-after address in New York; within its sumptuously thick walls the luxurious lives of Manhattan’s elite play out. There is Schiffer Diamond, a forty-something actress busily proving that women of style are truly ageless; aspiring It-girl Lola, on the outside and desperate to get in; Annalisa, the reluctant socialite who has renounced her law career to be the perfect wife; Mindy, who has been the family breadwinner too long for her own -- and her marriage's -- good. And then there is Enid, the glamorous grande dame who has lived at One Fifth Avenue for decades, and seen everything there is to see from her penthouse view.
Candace Bushnell’s brilliant new novel proves once again that no one else can capture New York -- the city where your zip code must be as exclusive as your designer handbag -- with such sparkling wit and flair.

Candace Bushnell Press Reviews
'Bushnell's unparalleled ability to capture type borders in uncanny; the perceptiveness of David Attenborough studying a rare bird... Bushnell is clearly a master observer: no details evades, from the trapping of her protagonists world to their hopes and dreams'
Sarah Maslin Nir, THE TIMES
'Bushnell writes like a dream
Henry Sutton, Book of the Week, DAILY MIRROR
'It's a shining example of accurately observed social commentary...she has matured as a writer, making it her mission to expose the warped materialism that life in the fast lane breeds, turning decent people into twisted, label-obsessed caricatures. It's all served up with a dose of devilishly dark humour, which makes us blissfully unaware we're being preached to. A hugely entertaining yarn with fascinating, and at times repellent, characters'

Below is a Q&A with this author.
I can’t live without… books.
If I wasn’t a writer… I’d want to be an Olympic Dressage Equestrian.
I feel most comfortable in… my own skin. You take yourself wherever you go.
The book I reread the most is… Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton. The main character, Undine Sprague, is wicked and wonderfully unrepentant.
My favorite vintage piece is… a green fringed Michael Kors dress I bought in the late eighties.
The three words that describe me best are: imagination, passion, determination.
The best thing about New York City is… the people. Everyone has a story.
My mantra is: Never have a mantra. Or a favorite color.
The best decision I’ve ever made… was to believe in myself.
The best part about writing The Carrie Diaries was: Writing The Carrie Diaries! I know I’m lucky to have found work I love to do.
