John Connolly is a mega-bestselling author of thrillers but recently his mind and his imagination wandered into an altogether different dimension and The Gates is the result.  A very strange novel but powerfully compelling and the writing is superb, it’s the story of a boy called Samuel and his unnervingly clever dog Boswell who accidentally witness the opening of a portal into hell in a neightbour’s cellar and as a consequence they find that it’s up to them to save the world from the demons threatening to destroy human life.  Meanwhile, deep in the heart of a swiss mountain, a pair of scientists are interrupted when the Large Hadron Collider malfunctions. Topical and timely as it links in to controversy surrounding the trials of the Collider, it is also demonically funny as science and satanism collide.
