Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Apart from this personal aspect of the case, the ter rible catastrophe which fell upon Belgium, following so swiftly in the wake of the prolonged effort - in which a number of Belgians played a prominent and distinguished part - to free the Congo from the far more appalling visita tions inflicted upon its people for twenty years, was a dramatic historical episode calculated powerfully to afiect the imagination, and to revive interest in the Congo tragedy.
