"Exploring personal growth through a life-changing sexual odyssey, this teems with the nourishing strength of female friendship bonds, and a whole lot of laughs."
Brightly humorous in style and wholesomely bold in the personal and sexual journeys undertaken by its two leading ladies, Eleanor Pilcher’s That's What She Said is female-centred fiction in its most feel-good form.
While self-assured Serena is exuberantly comfortable with sex (“I’ve seen a fair share of penises and vaginas in my life”), her self-doubting demisexual best friend Beth lacks confidence in love and work. In fact, she’s still a virgin, acknowledging, “It’s the fear of any virgin, even for one like me who’s still so blasé about my sexuality, to be called out for being inexperienced”.
As a result, Beth bravely decides to do something about her situation by embarking on a sexual odyssey that sees her face her biggest hang ups head on, through throwing herself into all manner of new sexual interactions, from speed-dating scenarios, to tantric experiences. Cue a whole lot of unexpected encounters and outcomes, with Serena at her side for support. At the same time, the novel explores a notable degree of co-dependency between the women — the flip-side of being so close — and both characters’ journeys to selfhood sit at the core of the story.
Breezily entertaining, largely thanks to the bold, honest, in-your-face communication between the perfectly-matched, chalk-and-cheese best friends, That's What She Said is also underpinned by a spirit of sisterhood and exploratory personal growth as it explores demisexuality and the messy rollercoaster of shifting to full-on adulthood.
