LoveReading Says
This addictive, and beautifully nuanced locked-room mystery is one of the best I’ve read. Karin Slaughter is right at the top of her game, each new novel becomes my favourite of hers. Will Trent and Sara Linton are hiking into their honeymoon and towards an incredibly dangerous investigation. It is no secret that I absolutely adore this series, and it comes as highly recommended by our team. While I always suggest starting at the beginning of a series, I believe this novel is so well set in its place that it could easily be read as a standalone. It starts with a map (I always love a good map!), followed by one of the best prologues I’ve read. I had goosebumps racing up and down my arms by the time I was ready to start chapter one. My mind was on full alert and I found myself ready to question everyone and everything. The sequence of the timeline cleverly allows you to form a relationship with the victim and suspects. While there is a certainly a level of diversion to be had in attempting to solve the mystery, Karin Slaughter’s trademark provocative eloquence can also be found. Piercing and challenging, the darkness is all-consuming. There is a thoughtful balance between the two elements, my heart and mind were both fully engaged. The sense of place here is immense, the rural setting is beautifully described and I could picture the scene. In fact the plot, characters, and setting all come together to form not only an immensely satisfying read, but I can see this making a fantastic film too. This novel unsurprisingly and most deservedly joins our LoveReading Star Books. Powerful, thought-provoking, and hugely entertaining, This is Why We Lied is an absolute humdinger of a read.
