"In Safe Hands is as sweet and warm as a freshly baked custard tart, and perfectly delivers an afternoon of escapism."
A sweet character-focused, second-chance, small town romance. In Safe Hands introduces us to Caro, who is divorced and moving to a small, unnamed Connecticut community. While getting settled she is drawn straight into local life by her exuberant neighbour Jeanie. Before long she’s talked into hosting the local book club and there she meets and is instantly interested in Ted Nichols. This book feels like a classic contemporary romance. The path through the story isn’t smooth, with gossip and misunderstandings getting in the way of romantic possibility. It is a quick, easy read to fall into and be swept away by. I always find that romance that follows this tried and tested route all offer a sense of familiarity, and the same can be said of In Safe Hands. The title tells you that you are in fact in safe hands and can sit back comfortably, knowing everything will be alright in the end. Although the book is written in the third person, all of the attention stays on Caro, meaning the reader shares her limited access to information via Jeannie and the local gossip, although it is easy for the reader to see that there is more than meets the eye. It does mean that we don’t learn too much about the town she’s moved to, but it does create a sense of universality, and connects back to that sense of familiarity. And to be fair, we’re not really picking up a romance for expansive landscape descriptions and character analysis. In Safe Hands is as sweet and warm as a freshly baked custard tart, and perfectly delivers an afternoon of escapism.
