"An entertaining mystery duo with a magical and fantasy setting."

An entertaining mystery duo with a magical and fantasy setting. In the fantasy lands of the Nine Star Courts, Ayln is training to be a page to a lord she’s never met. When Lord Miervaldis makes an appearance she is called to attend him as they travel to investigate a murder in another court. Navigating the hierarchies and cliques of the land, Alyn must help Miervaldis to try and find out who murdered a scribe while receiving warnings that her patron may not be all that he seems. There are references to magic but these seem to be in the background for now, as opposed to an integral part of the plotline.
I liked the style of this new mystery solving duo, from the anime style illustrations to the development of the characters' relationship. Alyn learning her role as page allows us to learn about the world and how it works along with her. Her place as page also allows her to see more of the running of the court, and to remain unobserved as she watches Miervaldis conduct his investigations. The loyalty and new kinship between the characters is nice to see and I think that this could be the start of an entertaining new mystery series.

I really enjoyed this book, a good story to young readers.

At her age it would have been hard to stand up and submit for someone she barely knew. It was a good point to make. It must be hard to build a new world and include all the nuances we take for granted, how social and official lives fit together. It was slow in some places but I was happy with that....
