"Readers of the series already will enjoy getting to know Feodor more and following this new leg of the story."
The third in a quartet of books, They Tested Our Loyalty is a thriller that follows an agent on the run, and the hunt for missing government intelligence. The events of this book follow immediately on from the previous and although there are plenty of times that key information is repeated, I think it would be of benefit to start this series at the beginning so you can keep a grasp on the characters and their involvement in the plotlines in order to better enjoy the book. After a deadly meeting at a remote Scottish home we follow Russian agent Feodor, who leaves his girlfriend, Hilary, to spend a year evading capture before doubling back to see Hilary’s experience of the year apart and the UK Government’s search to find the missing formulae. This is an imaginative plotline told in a very straightforward manner with a focus on dialogue. I prefer books that focus on showing the reader what’s happening rather than directly telling them, however, as the book is structured as a sequence of diary entries and meeting records this writing style does fit. The change in narrative perspective creates some tension around whether Feodor and Hilary will reunite as agreed, and allows for a number of unexpected twists towards the end. They Tested Our Loyalty is a treasure hunt style mystery set against the backdrop of international espionage. Readers of the series already will enjoy getting to know Feodor more and following this new leg of the story.
