Though Pay Back the Devil is the twelfth of Graham Masterton’s series centred on Katie Maguire, it also works well as a standalone novel, and will no doubt entice fans of police-procedurals to read them all.
If you are new to the series, for context, Katie, “with her bright green eyes and short red hair…looks like an Irish pixie, but she is no soft touch”. Rather, she’s a DS with a reputation for being “one of the most fearless detectives in Ireland”. A woman of steely stamina who throws her whole self into her work.
Though currently suspended, “they can’t suspend my heart”, she remarks, and which is how Katie comes to investigate a series of bombings targeted at members of the Dripsey Dozen, a group formed by descendants of executed IRA soldiers. “Two explosions in two days at properties occupied by members of the Dozen. Could that really be a coincidence?” No chance. With the work of her temporary replacement leaving much to be desired, Katie decides to step in to prevent more deaths, soon realising leaks must be coming from her own station. At the same time, Katie has to handle huge shifts in her complicated personal life.
Boasting sub-plots aplenty alongside the thrilling police action, Pay Back the Devil is a pacey crime novel that’ll leave Katie Maguire fans desperate for the next instalment, with her life set to take more intriguing turns courtesy of a climax that sees a door reopen as another closes for good.

Pay Back the Devil Synopsis
An explosion in a house in inner-city Cork sends shock waves through the community. Two people are killed in the blast and, at first, their deaths are believed to be the tragic result of a gas leak - but the victims' pasts suggest otherwise.
A HISTORY OF TERROR
The target is clear: the Dripsey Dozen, a group created by descendants of five local IRA soldiers who were executed for their crimes in 1921.
A POLICE CONSPIRACY
Despite the surviving members of the Dozen being relocated to safe houses, the bombing continues. Which means a leak at Anglesea Street Garda station is supplying confidential information to this new terrorist. This is suspended officer DS Katie Maguire's chance to get back on the force - and stop a traitor from burning Cork to the ground...
Pay Back the Devil is the gripping twelfth instalment of million-copy-bestselling Graham Masterton's police-procedural series.
